Working For The Man: Inspiring and Subversive
Projects For Residents of Cubicle Land

By Jeffrey Yamaguchi
2007 Perigee Book

You kids don't even know what it was like to work in an
office before the Internet! Well, I barely do. I used to fill up
my days with online loafing; searching for new music on
Pitchfork and bidding on super 8 film equipment on Ebay -
wasting time, accomplishing nothing, for up to 8 hours a
day. Jeffrey Yamaguchi's book
Working For the Man
offers a more meaningful approach to time-suckage. To
Yamaguchi, it's not about how much
time you spend at
work but how much of your
LIFE you spend at work.  So
you better make this lifetime count.

The book offers shrewd suggestions on how to creatively
navigate your workday so you can work with a higher
purpose; your own life interests. The sections have user
friendly titles like 'The Boss' and 'Coworker Relations'.
The chapters offer rules, tips and suggestions for dealing
with everything from sick days (complete with seasonally-
appropriate excuses) to banging your coworkers in your
cubicle, which is high risk according to the book.

The best information in the book is how to seriously get
things done that will improve your life, like writing a novel
or starting a side business. My favorite is Chapter 8:
Documentation, because it basically makes the case to
participate in projects like mine (ahem – The Office Sign
Project). Now, who wants to start a website for dry erase
board musings with me?

I'm ready for a brainstorming sesh whenever.
